Celebrating National Pet Fire Safety Day

As lovers of our furry friends, it’s essential to remember that our pets also need protection from the potential perils of fire. That’s why every year, on July 15, we observe National Pet Fire Safety Day.

This day is dedicated to educating pet owners on how to take precautions to keep their pets safe in case of a fire.

The Importance of Pet Fire Safety

Pets are part of the family, and their safety is just as important as any family member’s. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), over 300,000 families and pets are affected by fires each year, with 750 of these fires accidentally started by pets and wild animals.

As pet owners, we’re responsible for preventing these incidents and ensuring our pets’ safety.

History of Pet Fire Safety Day

National Pet Fire Safety Day is aimed at increasing awareness about the potential risks and hazards pets might encounter during a fire and educating pet owners on keeping their furry friends safe.

The day was officially recognized and promoted in 2009 by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and ADT Security Services. The goal was to educate pet owners on the necessary steps to prevent pets from starting fires and rescue pets from burning buildings.

The AKC and ADT joined forces to create this day, supplying pet owners with preventative measures and safety tips, including the use of window clings to alert firefighters to the presence of pets in the building and encouraging the pet-proofing of businesses to prevent fires.

National Pet Fire Safety Day is an important reminder for pet owners to include their pets in their fire safety plans and consider their pets’ safety when fire-proofing their property.

Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe

On National Pet Fire Safety Day, we aim to highlight some preventative measures and safety tips that can protect your pets and your business from fire.

  • Create a pet-proof environment: Eliminating fire hazards such as open flames, electrical cords, and unattended candles and securing flammable substances reduce the risk of a pet starting a fire.
  • Secure young and curious pets: When leaving young or curious pets unattended, secure them in pet-proofed areas away from potential fire-starting hazards.
  • Keep pet information updated: Ensure your pets are microchipped and their collars have up-to-date contact information. This will make it easier for rescue workers to reunite you with your pet in case of a fire.
  • Place a pet alert window cling: These decals can be placed on a front window or door to let firefighters know there are pets inside the building. Make sure to update the number of pets regularly.
  • Create a pet emergency kit: This should include a leash, food, water, and any necessary medications your pet might need if you have to evacuate quickly.
  • Plan an escape route: Pets can become frightened during a fire. Make sure you have an escape plan that includes your pets, and practice it regularly.

Tips To Help Pet Owners Prevent Fires Caused By Pets

Pets are naturally curious and can cause accidental fires.

  • Keep pets away from your office kitchen where employees are heating up their food.
  • Only use battery-operated or flameless candles.
  • Keep pets away from heat sources such as lamps and space heaters.
  • Watch out for the pet that likes to chew and check electrical cords often.
