The day was officially recognized and promoted in 2009 by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and ADT Security Services. The goal was to educate pet owners on the necessary steps to prevent pets from starting fires and rescue pets from burning buildings.

The AKC and ADT joined forces to create this day, supplying pet owners with preventative measures and safety tips, including the use of window clings to alert firefighters to the presence of pets in the building and encouraging the pet-proofing of businesses to prevent fires.

• Keep pet information updated: Ensure your pets are microchipped and their collars have up-to-date contact information. This will make it easier for rescue workers to reunite you with your pet in case of a fire.
• Place a pet alert window cling: These decals can be placed on a front window or door to let firefighters know there are pets inside the building. Make sure to update the number of pets regularly.
• Create a pet emergency kit: This should include a leash, food, water, and any necessary medications your pet might need if you have to evacuate quickly.
• Plan an escape route: Pets can become frightened during a fire. Make sure you have an escape plan that includes your pets, and practice it regularly.
