Standard Response Fire Sprinkler Heads

Did you know there is more than one type of fire sprinkler head? Do you know which type your Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC business needs? One of the two primary types of sprinkler heads is the standard response fire sprinkler head. They are called “standard” due to their counterpart sprinkler being named the quick response sprinkler head. Standard response sprinkler heads are most often used in a large commercial or industrial setting.

Fire Pros Fire Protection is here for your sprinkler needs and beyond. With over 30 years of experience serving Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, we offer expert services to keep you and your employees as safe as possible. If you need a fire sprinkler system installed or need to enhance your fire protection plan in any way, contact us today!

How Do Standard Response (SR) Fire Sprinkler Heads Work?

One type of fire sprinkler does not all fit all fire protection needs. Certain environments are more suited to a standard response sprinkler head than others. There are six main characteristics that determine a sprinkler’s ability to extinguish a fire. They are:

  • Thermal sensitivity
  • Temperature rating
  • Orifice size
  • Installation orientation
  • Water distribution characteristics
  • Special service conditions

Standard response sprinklers work to extinguish fire by wetting and cooling the areas surrounding the fire, in an effort to prevent it from spreading further. This “drenching” technique helps to remove the fire’s source and buys time for the fire department to arrive on-scene. Standard response sprinklers’ primary goal is to contain the fire within its place of origin and thwart its growth. For this SR sprinklers activate one at a time, containing the spray to the fire’s location of origin.

For standard response fire sprinkler head installation, call Fire Pros Fire Protection. We can outfit your MD, VA, or DC business with the sprinklers you need to keep your employees safe.

Who Should Use Standard Response Sprinkler Heads?

Standard response fire sprinkler heads are typically best-suited for large industrial or commercial environments, like warehouses or factories. SR sprinkler heads use a 5MM bulb filled with a glycerin-based liquid, whereas quick response (QR) heads have a 3MM bulb. The smaller bulb is the reason QR heads are “quick—“ the smaller bulb means a faster response time. However, locations with higher ceilings and larger areas will benefit from SR sprinkler heads’ contained water ejection.

What sprinkler you install not only depends on your environment, but also your building occupancy, ambient room temperature, local regulations, and NFPA guidelines. If you are looking for replacement sprinklers, it is considered best practice to match your old sprinkler’s type with your new sprinkler(s). You can tell the response type, model, temperature, and listing by looking at the sprinkler head. If you are unsure which type of sprinkler is best suited to your needs, give Fire Pros Fire Protection a call or contact us online, and we will match you with the best sprinkler head for your fire protection plan.

Wet Basement storage: Install the missing Inspection Test Valve sign and provide proper identification. Valve identification is beneficial in at least three ways. It allows the fire department personnel to locate and operate the valve. A contractor can readily shut off the system to make modifications. And system valves can be easily identified during periodic inspections. NFPA 13 (6.7.4.1) All control, drain, and test connection valves shall be provided with permanently marked weatherproof metal or rigid plastic identification signs. Wet Basement storage: Remove and replace the outdated water gauge. Pressure surges are typically trapped in the system by the check valve. Readings from these gauges can be used to establish a database on the available pressure in the water supply. The gauge on the supply side is also used during the main drain test to establish a database of residual pressure in the water supply. NFPA 13 (8.17.3) & NFPA 25 (13.2.7.2) Gauges shall be replaced every 5 yea
