Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall 2017

If you have any Kidde fire extinguishers in your Maryland, DC, or Virginia business, your equipment could be affected by a recent recall issued by the manufacturer in November 2017. The recall stems from reports Kidde has received that several of their fire extinguisher models are unsafe or ineffective to use in a fire emergency. Check your extinguishers now and use the information below to help you determine if you should take action.

If you are located in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC and need to replace your fire extinguishers, contact us online now.

Why Is Kidde Recalling Fire Extinguishers?

Certain models of Kidde fire extinguishers with plastic handles reportedly fail to discharge properly in a fire emergency because the nozzle becomes clogged. Some reports also indicate that the nozzle may detach with enough force to cause injury on impact.

A total of 391 reports have been filed with complaints of failed or limited discharge or nozzle detachment. One incident in 2014 resulted in the death of a civilian when emergency responders couldn’t douse a car fire because the recalled Kidde extinguisher they attempted to use became clogged. In total, 16 injuries, 91 incidents of property damage, and the fatality described here spurred the Kidde recall, which was announced on November 2, 2017.

Is My Kidde Fire Extinguisher Affected?

The recall applies to about 37.8 million extinguishers in the US, 2.7 million extinguishers in Canada, and 7,000 extinguishers in Mexico. While there’s no guarantee that all of these units are unsafe, Kidde has made the responsible decision to recall all potentially affected extinguishers. Some of the models included in this recall were previously discontinued and recalled in March 2009 and February 2015.

The Kidde recall applies to two fire extinguisher styles:

  • Plastic handle extinguishers: If you have ABC or BC Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and 2017 that have plastic handles, they may demonstrate the problems listed above. Check the model number on the side of your fire extinguisher and compare it to the chart of recalled models on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. In total, 134 plastic handle models are affected.
  • Push-button Pindicator extinguishers: If you have Kidde Pindicator fire extinguishers manufactured between 1995 and 2017, they may be affected by the recall. These units are no-gauge push-button models in red and white canisters with red or black nozzles designed for use in kitchens and personal watercrafts. You can find the exact models on the CPSC website. In total, eight Pindicator models are affected.

Before the recall, these Kidde fire extinguishers were sold at various outlets. You may have purchased yours at:

  • Menards
  • Montgomery Ward
  • Sears
  • The Home Depot
  • Walmart
  • Other department, home, and hardware stores
  • Amazon.com
  • ShopKidde.com
  • Other online retailers
